Slide on a Hill

Hello,
We have a hill in our back yard, with a nice slope -- not too steep,
not too flat. Everytime I look at it, I think that it would be great to
have a slide just winding down the hill.

I image going to my local hardware store and picking up some kind of
large plastic tube or something that I could assemble together to make
a slide. Afterall, I just need a flexible material that's smooth enough
to slide on. Something lightweight and not expensive.

DOES anyone have any good ideas on what sort of material I could use to
make the slide in my imagination? :-)

The only thing I can think of that would be big enough would be the giant
drainage pipe that are used for sewers and storm drains. This would be too
expensive.

Perhaps you can go to one of the companies that sell play structures and
just buy slides from swing sets. Make sure you have plenty of protection
(e.g., right type and depth of wood chips) for when they fall off and at the
bottom of the slide. (Or you'll want to rent an ambulance.)

You can find ideas by lookin gup play structures in Google. I think target
also sells play sets, so you might be able get slides (sold as replacement
slides) from there, as well. The play structure companies might also have
some experience. You might also want to get some of the stairs for the kids
or the climbing things so they can go up easily.

And for more fun, add water, for faster sliding. Just kidding.

You definately can buy slides separately from companies that make play
structures. Not super expensive, but they wouldn't "wind down the
hill".

It sounds like you are considering something flexible like plastic, but
I don't think that would work too well -- seems like it would be hard
to keep in place, it wouldn't slide that well without water, and little
bumps and rocks on the hillside would be really uncomfortable.

I'm thinking that some sheets of heavy plastic might work. There is a
fall "pumpkin patch" in our area - one of those country places with a
hayride and outdoor activities for the kids - that set up enormous
slides on a hill with some sort of plastic sheets nailed into the
ground. They used hay bales to the sides. Maybe you can e-mail them
and ask about it. It was one of the following two places (I can't
remember which, although I think it was the first):

One of my neighbors has one down their hill. The only reason I know about
it is because they had it in their ad when they were trying to sell the
house. Cool idea.
