As to what to give my dad for Christmas. He is 86 years old and really no
hobbies to speak of. I'm sure he has enough ties and shirts to last a
lifetime, lol. We have given gift cards to various places over the years. I
have given fruit baskets. I just don't know what to give this year. Does
anyone have any ideas at all? Time is running out, waaah! :o)

Does he read any magazines? My dad loved Newsweek and Time so I'd get
him subscriptions to those.
Wall Street Journal? Crossword books?

A photo of the grandchildren.
Get the children to make something-could be cook him some chocolates and
make a box for them to go in.

Would he like to vacation with your family somewhere? We give those out
occasionally and it's a hit. We gave out cruises to my IL's two years ago
and we will do it again this year and I will give my dad a separate cruise
with us. The IL's loved it and it gave us more time with the family. I am
hoping my dad will like it just as much. Of course, you could give a trip
to a lodge in the national park or something else.

My dad is hard to shop for. I gave framed portraits of the kids one year.
Those food/flower subscriptions look good. They send you a different fruit
basket or flower arrangement every month.

They have those food delivery services in lots of large metropolitan areas.
I gave SIL a gift certificate for that after she had her babies so she
wouldn't have to cook. They bring food from a large variety of restaurants
hot to your door. MIL was helping SIL out after the babies and she said SIL
loved it. MIL got to share in it and she said it was a very good idea.

I second the magazine idea - but I happen to love magazines. If he
doesn't like to read, forget it.

At one point, my parents asked us to stop giving them stuff for
birthdays and Christmas, and instead to give a collection of photos of
the kids. (They didn't want them framed, because they had some many
framed photos around already - they liked to mount them in their own
scrapbooks. But if your dad's place isn't overrun with photos already,
one of those framed photo collages is nice.)

I, personally, like gifts of food (a really nice bottle of wine, a
smoked salmon, a collection of gourmet coffees, etc.) But that's not
everyone's cup of tea.

My favorite gift every year is a donation in my name to a super, duper great
charity.

I would probably go with something 'disposible' -- food (either fancy
food or more practical food, depending on his abiltities and interests)
or a ticket to the theater or something like that. By this age he
probably doesnt' need any more stuff.

(I asked my parents what they want for Hanukkah, and my mom basically
said 'forget about it, we don't need anything.' Since I can't afford to
buy them a cruise or vacation, I'll probably take them at their word.)
